Definition: | Occupational health is a branch of medicine concerned with the effects of work on health and health on work. It aims to: 1) protect people against work-related health hazards and prevent work-related ill health and injury; 2) contribute to the design and adaptation of work to suit the physical and mental capacity of workers and their assignment to jobs for which they are suited; 3) contribute to the establishment and maintenance of the highest possible degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers; and 4) promote best practice techniques to ensure early diagnosis and treatment of work-related ill health and injury and the rehabilitation of workers as appropriate. |
