Person who has undergone a
training course in administering first aid at work and holds a current first aid at work certificate, which has to be approved by the Health and Safety Executive.
Training
Any
employer shall provide, or ensure that there is provided, such number of suitable persons as is adequate an appropriate in the circumstances for rendering
first-aid to his
employees if they are injured or ill at work; and for this purpose a person shall not be suitable unless he has undergone a) such training and such qualifications as the Health and Safety Executive may approve for the time being in respect of that case or class of case, and b) such additional training, if any, as may be appropriate in the circumstances of that case. When arranging training, employers should let the training organisation know of any particular
hazards at work so that, if possible, the training can be tailored to their needs.
Training courses offer a basic curriculum in a range of first-aid competencies needed in any
workplace. They last for at least 24 hours, usually held over four days or spread over several weeks. First aid at work certificates are valid for three years. Requalification courses are of at least 12 hours training and are normally held over two days.

Lower risk (shops, offices, libraries)
Fewer than 50 employees: at least one appointed person
50-100: at least one first aider
More than 100: one additional first aider for every 100 employed;
Medium risk (light engineering and assembly work, food processing, warehousing)
Fewer than 20: at least one appointed person
20-100: At least one first aider for every 50 employed
More than 100: One additional first aider for every 100 employed;
Higher risk (most construction, slaughterhouse, chemical manufacture, extensive work with dangerous machinery or sharp instruments)
Fewer than 5: at least one appointed person
5-50: at least one first aider
More than 50: one additional first aider forevery 50 employed.
Where there are hazards for which additional first-aid skills are necessary: in addition, at least one first aider trained in the specific emergency action.
